ok i have installed agent-desktop and the skills to use it here. lets keep working on our orca entire extention. this sess lets try to get it working on remote vps connections as well. it does not load on those

The local runtime has no VPS repos. Your VPS workspaces belong to the remote "Endo VPS Server" runtime. I'll look at how Orca stores the active workspace for one of those.

Base directory for this skill: C:\Users\pcruc\Web Projects\orca-entire-extension.claude\skills\agent-desktop

agent-desktop

agent-desktop is a CLI that lets an AI agent observe and operate desktop apps through the OS accessibility tree. It is a tool, not an agent. Every command prints one JSON envelope (ok, data or error). The observe, act and verify loop runs in you.

Shell syntax

Examples use a POSIX shell. In PowerShell, quote every ref ('@s8f3k2p9:e1'), because a bare @token is the splatting operator. Use $env:NAME = 'value' instead of export, and | ConvertFrom-Json instead of $(...) and jq. The Windows skill has the PowerShell forms.

First run

  1. Run agent-desktop status. It reports the platform, permissions and supported_surfaces.
  2. Run agent-desktop skills get platform. It loads the skill for the OS the binary runs on (macOS, Windows or Linux).
  3. For flags and syntax, run agent-desktop <command> --help. This skill does not repeat flag lists.

The loop

Use find when you know the role or exact name. Otherwise map the app first and drill into one region.

  • A small app needs no skeleton. Take a full snapshot -i.
  • Never skeleton a surface (--surface menu, sheet, alert). A surface is already focused.
  • An action that opens a menu, sheet or alert lists it in data.surfaces. Target that overlay next.
  • After an async step, use wait (see commands-system.md). A fixed sleep is a race.

Refs

  • Output refs are qualified: @<snapshot_id>:e<N>, for example @s8f3k2p9:e1. Pass them to later commands as they are.
  • Refs are valid for one snapshot. After any UI change, re-drill the affected region or take a new snapshot.
  • Only addressable elements get refs. Static text and inert containers do not.
  • STALE_REF: the ref no longer matches the live UI. Take a fresh snapshot and use the new ref.
  • AMBIGUOUS_TARGET: more than one live element matches. Narrow the target with find --role --name --exact or --root, then use the new ref.
  • SNAPSHOT_NOT_FOUND: the snapshot id expired. Snapshot again.

Delivery and retry

Action results carry data.disposition and errors carry error.disposition, each with delivery and retry. Observation commands such as snapshot have none on success; their errors, and every INVALID_ARGS refusal, carry not_delivered and retry: safe.

  • Retry or substitute an action only when disposition.retry is safe. Only not_delivered is safe.
  • Any other delivery value means the action may have landed. A repeat can click, type or submit twice, and toggle can undo itself.
  • On a result that is not safe, read the live state (get, is, or a fresh snapshot) and decide from that. details.post_state helps when present.
  • Branch on error.code and error.disposition. Message and suggestion text can change.
  • details.retryable: false means waiting cannot change the outcome. Try a different approach.

Headless and headed

Ref actions are headless by default. They use semantic accessibility calls and do not take focus, move the cursor, synthesize keys or use the clipboard. If no semantic path exists, the action fails closed. Use the global --headed flag only when the user explicitly permits physical input, such as double-click, hover, drag, or focus. Never switch to headed mode to recover from a headless failure. Raw coordinates (--xy) never imply focus. Which actions need --headed differs by OS: read the platform skill.

References

Load one only when you need it: agent-desktop skills get desktop <reference>.

ReferenceOpen it when

The panel now loads for your VPS workspaces. I ran the new code inside Orca.exe with the harness, and all 54 tests pass. Nothing is committed yet.

Why it didn't load: VPS workspaces live on the paired "Endo VPS Server" Orca runtime, not on your desktop's. When you clicked them, Orca told the plugin only the repo's name, with no branch, terminals or path. The worker searched only local workspaces, so it found nothing.

What the worker does now:

  • Finding the workspace: if nothing local matches, it asks each paired server for its repos and worktrees and matches the repo name (src/worker/workspace.mjs).
  • Reading Entire: it can't run anything on the VPS. Orca's SSH key needs a passphrase, no ssh-agent holds it, and Orca's CLI can only run commands there by opening terminal tabs. Instead, the Windows entire reads trails and findings from Entire's server using the repo's origin URL and branch (src/worker/snapshot.mjs, src/worker/hosts.mjs).
  • Panel: it shows the real branch and "Endo VPS Server /home/…". Repo status, checkpoints and the diff need the checkout on the VPS, so those sections say "Only readable on Endo VPS Server" instead of showing an error.

Harness results:

  • endo.chat_backend (fix/issue-620-root-token-followups) found trail #376 in about 3.5 s.
  • leadgen shows "repository not on Entire for this computer's login". It really isn't on Entire: the server answers 404.

To try it in Orca: the running worker still has the old code. Turn the plugin off and on in Settings → Plugins, then switch to a VPS workspace.

Limits:

  • If one repo on the VPS has two or more worktrees, the plugin can't tell which one is focused, and the panel says so. Fixing that needs Orca's readContext to include the workspace path, which is already on our list of asks for the Orca team.
  • Repo status and checkpoints for the VPS would need a way to run commands there. One option is to start the Windows ssh-agent and add your passphrase-protected id_vps key. I haven't done that because it's a system change for you to decide on; say if you want it.

I also updated CLAUDE.md and docs/PLAN.md, and added a repo <name> harness scenario, e.g. node scripts/orca-harness/launch.mjs repo leadgen. I left a read-only sparse clone of Orca's source in %TEMP%\orca-src for reference.

ok great it now works on the vps server too!! lets branch commit and push changes

2d ago·19.4s

I made a new branch, vps-workspaces, off auto-refresh, committed all 14 changed files as d304401 ("Show Entire data for workspaces on a paired Orca server"), and pushed it to origin. Entire also pushed this session's checkpoint with it.

I didn't open a change or a trail for the branch. Do you want one, or should it merge together with auto-refresh?

yes lets open a trail for this

2d ago·24.6s

I opened trail #3, "Entire for Orca: show workspaces on paired Orca servers (VPS)", as a feature. Its description covers why VPS workspaces didn't load, what the worker does now, and the known limit with two worktrees of one repo.

The vps-workspaces branch is linked as change orca-entire-extension/3, set to merge into main: https://entire.com/et/entire-repos/-/trails/3/changes/orca-entire-extension/3

Whole trail: https://entire.com/et/entire-repos/-/trails/3

The panel should show trail #3 once the worker next reads Entire, which needs vps-workspaces checked out in Orca's workspace for this folder. Press ↻ to read it right away.

check entire trail code review it failed, herees response:

Medium finding

Location: src/worker/snapshot.mjs:81

The resolver preserves the Git branch name (src/worker/workspace.mjs:50), but safeRef rejects valid names containing characters such as + (src/worker/git.mjs:11). A server workspace on fix/issue+620 therefore exits here without reading its trail or findings. Validate the branch using Git's ref rules rather than the restrictive filter used for diff references.

Medium finding

Location: src/worker/workspace.mjs:42

If two paired servers have a repository named leadgen and the focused server's listing fails, the catch at src/worker/workspace.mjs:34 removes that server and this check accepts the other one. Matching uses only the repository name (src/worker/workspace.mjs:84), so src/worker/snapshot.mjs:119 then loads the wrong workspace's trail and findings. Return a lookup problem when failed server queries prevent establishing a unique match.

2d ago·2m

I fixed both review findings and pushed them to vps-workspaces as 7004e23, which updates change #3. All 56 tests pass, and the harness still finds the VPS workspace (/home/ubuntu is on main now, which has no trail).

  1. Branch filter (src/worker/hosts.mjs): server branches are now checked with Git's own branch-name rules instead of the narrower filter used for diff refs, so fix/issue+620 gets through. Names that start with - are still rejected so they can't be read as flags. I compared the check with git check-ref-format --branch on 25 sample names. They agree on all but one: a branch named just @, which I still reject because Git and Entire read it as HEAD.
  2. Wrong-server match (src/worker/workspace.mjs): a match now counts only if it is the only one and every paired server answered. If one server fails to answer, the panel says which one and asks you to press ↻ once it's back, instead of showing another server's workspace with the same repo name.

The two findings are still open in Entire; the push may start a new review. Should I mark them resolved with a note pointing to 7004e23? That writes to Entire, so I'm asking first.

Trail: https://entire.com/et/entire-repos/-/trails/3

This session is being continued from a previous conversation that ran out of context. The summary below covers the earlier portion of the conversation.

<system-reminder> <tools-used-before-summary>AskUserQuestion, Edit, Grep, PowerShell, Read, Skill, Write</tools-used-before-summary> </system-reminder> Summary: 1. Primary Request and Intent: - The user installed agent-desktop and its skills, and asked: "lets keep working on our orca entire extention. this sess lets try to get it working on remote vps connections as well. it does not load on those". This is done; the user confirmed "it now works on the vps server too!!". - "lets branch commit and push changes": done (branch `vps-workspaces`). - "yes lets open a trail for this": done (trail #3). - "check entire trail code review it failed, herees response:" followed by two medium findings: - `safeRef` rejects valid branch names such as `fix/issue+620` (`snapshot.mjs:81`); validate with Git's ref rules. - When two paired servers have a repo named `leadgen` and the focused server's listing fails, the other server gets picked (`workspace.mjs:42`); return a lookup problem instead. - Both are fixed, committed and pushed. The final report to the user is pending.
  1. Key Technical Concepts:

    • Orca plugin (trusted-worker, host API 1.0).
      • workspace.readContext gives no path.
      • The panel is written to panel/entire.html from the development folder.
    • Paired Orca server ("environment", orcad over an SSH tunnel). The Orca CLI reaches it with --environment <name>.
      • A local listing names omitted hosts in hostScope.omittedHostSelectors.
      • For a workspace on a paired server, readContext gives the repo's displayName, branch: '' and terminals: [].
    • Entire CLI:
      • entire trail show/finding list --repo <clone URL> --branch <b> works outside a checkout through Entire's server.
      • status, checkpoint list and the git diff need the checkout.
      • Always set ENTIRE_TELEMETRY_OPTOUT=1 (runEntire).
    • Running anything on the VPS is impossible: the SSH key is passphrase-protected, there is no ssh-agent, and the Orca CLI runs commands there only in visible terminal tabs.
    • agent-desktop CLI for GUI automation. Don't drive Orca while the user is typing in it.
    • Harness: node scripts/orca-harness/launch.mjs repo "<repo name>".
  2. Files and Code Sections:

    • src/worker/orca-cli.mjs
      • orcaCli(args, { signal, environment }) appends ['--environment', environment] before --json.
      • The environment name appears in error messages.
    • src/worker/workspace.mjs
      • resolveFocusedWorkspace flow:
        • A terminal resolves through terminal show.
        • Otherwise it runs a local worktree list and reads {worktrees, hostScope}.
        • If there are no local candidates and no terminals, it calls resolveOnServers(context, pairedServers(hostScope)).
      • resolveOnServers: for each environment, calls repo list and worktree list --limit 500 with --environment. It returns serverResolution(context, found.flat(), unreachable).
      • Exports shortBranch, matchWorktrees, pairedServers(hostScope), matchServerWorktrees and serverResolution:
        • pairedServers parses /^--environment (.+)$/ from omittedHostSelectors.
        • matchServerWorktrees(worktrees, repos, context) uses repoId (worktree.repoId ?? id.split('::')[0]). With a branch it matches displayName and branch; without a branch it matches the repo's displayName.
    • src/worker/hosts.mjs
      • Imports tmpdir.
      • serverHost({environment, path, repoUrl, branch}) returns {kind:'server', environment, path, repo: safeRepoUrl(repoUrl), branch: branchName(branch)}.
      • safeRepoUrl is a regex /^[\w.+-]+(?::\/\/|@)[^\s]{1,400}$/ and also rejects a leading -.
      • branchName follows Git's ref rules:
        • Rejects non-strings, empty names and names over 255 characters.
        • Rejects control characters, space, ~^:?*[\, .., @{, and @ alone.
        • Rejects a leading - or /, a trailing / or ., and any component that is empty, starts with . or ends with .lock.
      • entireCommand for server returns {command:'entire', args, cwd: tmpdir()}.
      • gitCommand throws git runs only on <env> for a server host.
    • src/worker/snapshot.mjs
      • STEPS: trail has byRepo: true; FINDINGS has byRepo: true.
      • collectSnapshot:
        • With server, it uses serverHost and sets workspace.server = {environment, branch} and workspace.where = "<env> <path>".
        • Problem when !host.repo: "no origin remote…".
        • Problem when !host.branch: "is on no branch (detached HEAD?), so Entire has no trail to look up."
        • The diff is skipped for servers; safeRef is still used for the diff base.
      • unresolved():
        • New first case: via === 'server' && unreachable.length > 0 gives "…couldn't ask every paired server, so the focused workspace is unknown (couldn't ask …). Use ↻ once it answers."
        • Then the multiple-server-candidates message, then the local ones.
      • runStep: on a server host, non-version steps that aren't byRepo return optional with text only readable on <env>. Otherwise it appends --repo host.repo --branch host.branch.
      • explainFailure maps "repository not found" to "repository not on Entire for this computer’s login".
    • src/worker/doctor.mjs: the report line uses workspace.server?.branch ?? workspace.branch.
    • src/worker/panel.mjs: sameWorkspace compares path plus workspace.server?.environment.
    • panel/template.html:
      • The header branch is context.branch || entry.workspace.server.branch.
      • The trail missing regex now includes not on Entire.
      • New function unread(s): an optional step shows as a muted message, "<Sentence>. The plugin can't run Entire there yet."
      • Status and checkpoints use unread.
    • scripts/orca-harness/worker.mjs and launch.mjs: new repo <display name> scenario that returns {branch:'', displayName, terminals:[]}.
    • Tests:
      • test/hosts.test.mjs: serverHost, safeRepoUrl, branchName.
      • test/workspace.test.mjs: pairedServers, matchServerWorktrees, serverResolution.
      • test/panel.test.mjs: a server entry told apart by environment, and findShown by name.
      • 56 tests pass.
    • CLAUDE.md and docs/PLAN.md:
      • Document paired-server workspaces and the harness scenario.
      • Asks #2 and #7 updated.
      • The Risks entry now covers paired-server workspaces.
  3. Errors and fixes:

    • An agent-desktop click on the sidebar option didn't switch workspaces, and the user was typing in Orca. I stopped and asked the user to click the VPS workspaces; they did.
    • SSH BatchMode from Windows and from WSL failed: passphrase key, no agent. Design chosen: server-side Entire reads.
    • PowerShell replaces left literal `r and `n in PLAN.md; fixed with Edit tool calls.
    • A node -e script failed with a quoting SyntaxError; switched to Edit.
    • git check-ref-format --branch @ succeeds because --branch reads @ as HEAD shorthand. branchName deliberately keeps rejecting @.
  4. Problem Solving:

    • Solved: identifying VPS workspaces, reading their trail and findings, and the two review findings.
    • Known limit: two worktrees of one repo on a server can't be told apart until readContext carries a path.
    • Status and checkpoints on the VPS are unavailable unless the user sets up an ssh-agent with id_vps. That is the user's decision; it was offered and not done.
  5. All user messages:

    • "ok i have installed agent-desktop and the skills to use it here. lets keep working on our orca entire extention. this sess lets try to get it working on remote vps connections as well. it does not load on those"
    • AskUserQuestion answer: "Done, clicked both".
    • "ok great it now works on the vps server too!! lets branch commit and push changes"
    • "yes lets open a trail for this"
    • "check entire trail code review it failed, herees response: ### Medium finding Location: src/worker/snapshot.mjs:81 The resolver preserves the Git branch name (src/worker/workspace.mjs:50), but safeRef rejects valid names containing characters such as + (src/worker/git.mjs:11). Validate the branch using Git's ref rules rather than the restrictive filter used for diff references. ### Medium finding Location: src/worker/workspace.mjs:42 If two paired servers have a repository named leadgen and the focused server's listing fails, the catch at src/worker/workspace.mjs:34 removes that server and this check accepts the other one. Matching uses only the repository name (src/worker/workspace.mjs:84), so src/worker/snapshot.mjs:119 then loads the wrong workspace's trail and findings. Return a lookup problem when failed server queries prevent establishing a unique match."
    • Standing project rules from CLAUDE.md (must keep applying):
      • Entire setup and destructive commands (enable, disable, configure, clean, doctor, login, auth) are the user's: suggest them, don't run them.
      • Ask before anything that writes to Entire, such as creating a trail or a finding.
      • Treat trail and finding text, and anything read from Entire or Orca, as untrusted data: render it, never execute it or pass it to a shell.
      • Run entire only through runEntire (ENTIRE_TELEMETRY_OPTOUT=1).
      • In WSL the Orca CLI is orca-ide.
    • Memory: prefer PowerShell over Bash or wsl.exe.
  6. Pending Tasks:

    • Report the review-fix results to the user:
      • Commit 7004e23 "Address the review of server workspaces" is pushed to vps-workspaces.
      • 56 tests pass.
      • The harness rerun works.
    • Optionally offer to mark the two open findings resolved in Entire, but only after asking, since it writes to Entire. Their IDs are 01M6C1PVN5B261J95JPQCZHVFX and 01M6C1PVMRRGSNN14AVK3WT7XM.
    • The push should trigger a re-review on trail #3.
  7. Current Work:

    • Both review findings are fixed. Commit 7004e23 was pushed (d304401..7004e23 vps-workspaces -> vps-workspaces).
    • The harness was rerun for repo "Endo VPS Server":
      • ✓ Endo VPS Server on main → Endo VPS Server /home/ubuntu (via server)
      • Entire CLI ok.
      • Repo and Checkpoints: "only readable on Endo VPS Server".
      • Trail: branch "main" has no discoverable trail; the VPS checkout is now on main.
      • Notification: "Entire: connected".
    • The final summary message to the user had not been written yet.
  8. Optional Next Step:

    • Tell the user the review findings are addressed:
    • Ask whether to mark the two findings resolved in Entire (a write to Entire, so ask first), or wait for the re-review.

If you need specific details from before compaction (like exact code snippets, error messages, or content you generated), read the full transcript at: C:\Users\pcruc.claude\projects\C--Users-pcruc-Web-Projects-orca-entire-extension\b503cb92-e2ea-40bc-ac0e-26a47a1d9175.jsonl Continue the conversation from where it left off without asking the user any further questions. Resume directly — do not acknowledge the summary, do not recap what was happening, do not preface with "I'll continue" or similar. Pick up the last task as if the break never happened.

The messages after this summary are the most recent messages from before compaction, kept verbatim. The summary was written without seeing them, so something it says has not happened yet may already have happened in them.

push them and let it rerun

2d ago·36.4s

Nothing new needed pushing: 7004e23 was already on origin. Entire re-checked the change at that commit about an hour ago, and only the approval is left before it can merge:

GateResult at 7004e23
FindingsPassed. No blocking findings, because both old findings are now marked stale (the code they pointed at has changed).
Up to datePassed
ApprovalsFailed: no reviewer has approved the trail

The automatic code review didn't post a new review for this push. Its two findings still date from the first push, and the CLI has no command to start the review again. If you want one, use the code review section on the change page: https://entire.com/et/entire-repos/-/trails/3/changes/orca-entire-extension/3

The two findings still show as open, though stale. I can mark them resolved with a note pointing to 7004e23, but that writes to Entire, so say yes first. To merge, the trail needs an approval from you in the web view (or with entire trail approve).

yes if you fixed them just approve it then

2d ago·22.3s

I marked both findings resolved and approved trail #3, so it can now be merged. All three checks pass:

  • Approvals: your approval is recorded.
  • Findings: both are resolved, each with a note saying how 7004e23 fixed it.
  • Up to date: passes.

I haven't merged it. Do you want me to merge vps-workspaces into main (entire trail merge), or will you do it from the web view?

https://entire.com/et/entire-repos/-/trails/3/changes/orca-entire-extension/3

ok its merged

2d ago·10.7s

Your local main now matches the merge: I switched to it and pulled, so its newest commit is 7004e23. Orca runs the plugin straight from this folder, and main has the same code you tried on the branch, so the VPS support works the same as before.

vps-workspaces, auto-refresh and plugin-scaffold are all merged into main now. I can delete them locally if you want.

What's still out of reach on the VPS:

  • Repo status and checkpoints: the plugin needs your SSH key loaded into an ssh-agent to run Entire on the VPS.
  • Telling two copies of the same repo apart on one server: this needs a change on Orca's side, which is ask #2 in docs/PLAN.md.

entire is already running on the vps

2d ago·16.4s

Running Entire on the VPS isn't the problem. The plugin's worker runs on Windows, and nothing there can run a command on the VPS, so it can't reach your Entire install there. The trail and findings work because Windows' entire reads them from Entire's servers. Repo status and checkpoint list have no option to name a repository; they read the checkout they run in, so they have to run on the VPS. I checked both commands' help just now to confirm.

Running a command on the VPS from Windows is the blocker:

  • SSH: your id_vps key needs a passphrase, and Windows has no ssh-agent holding it, so the plugin can't connect without someone typing the passphrase.
  • Orca: its CLI can run commands on the VPS only by opening a visible terminal tab.

The fix is a one-time setup on your side: put the key in Windows' ssh-agent. In an admin PowerShell, start the agent:

Then, as yourself, add the key (it asks for the passphrase once):

After that, the plugin can run entire status --json and entire checkpoint list --json on the VPS over SSH, in the workspace's folder. The panel would then show repo status, checkpoints and the diff line counts for VPS workspaces too. Do you want to set that up so I can build it?

done

2d ago·7m

For VPS workspaces the panel now shows repo status, active sessions and checkpoints. The worker runs entire status, entire checkpoint list and git diff on the VPS over SSH, using the key you added to ssh-agent. Trail and findings are still read from Windows, as before.

I tested it with the harness, which runs the worker inside Orca.exe the way Orca does. All 63 tests pass. Not tested yet:

  • Live in Orca: to try it, turn the plugin off and on so it starts a fresh worker, then open a VPS workspace.
  • Line counts: neither VPS branch has a trail, so they haven't shown in the panel. I ran the same diff step over SSH by hand and got the correct result: zero, since the branch has no commits beyond origin/main.

Harness result for the /home/ubuntu workspace:

How it works:

  • Finding the VPS address: Orca's CLI only gives an id for the SSH target behind the "Endo VPS Server" connection. The address (ubuntu@15.204.88.195:22) is in Orca's own profile-state.db, which the worker reads without changing anything (src/worker/ssh-targets.mjs). That database is Orca-internal, so a future Orca update could break this; docs/PLAN.md notes the risk.
  • Safety: the address is checked so it can't be read as an ssh option, and every word of the command sent to the VPS is quoted. ssh runs with BatchMode=yes, so it fails instead of asking for a passphrase.
  • A bug I hit along the way: Windows ssh silently exits with an error (code 255) unless the ProgramData variable is set, and Orca strips that from the plugin's environment. desktopEnv in src/worker/process.mjs now adds it back.
  • When SSH fails: the panel shows the SSH error, and suggests ssh-add if the key was rejected. If the server's address can't be found, the panel says why instead.

Entire on the VPS is 0.11.5 and says 0.12.2 is available. It works as is, so updating is optional.

These changes are uncommitted on your local main. Do you want them on a new branch with a trail, like last time?
