Can you take a look, what needs to be done to support entire as an repo provider

1w ago·1m

Today checkpoint_remote only works with GitHub and GitLab. Adding entire (an Entire-native repo, entire://<cluster>/et/<project>/<repo>) is a medium-sized change in the CLI. It also has two questions only the product side and the server can answer, and those decide the design.

What already works

  • The setting itself. GetCheckpointRemote (cmd/entire/cli/settings/settings.go:2029) accepts any provider string. So {"provider":"entire","repo":"acme/app-checkpoints"} already loads.
  • The transport. git-remote-entire is an ordinary git remote helper. Pushes and per-ref fetches to entire://…/et/… should work through it without changes, and it handles its own auth (the login session, or ENTIRE_TOKEN in CI).
  • The URL shape. deriveCheckpointURLFromInfo (checkpoint/remote/util.go:824) already keeps the cluster host and forge segment when origin is an entire:// URL. It just never gets as far as the et forge (see the routing bug below).

The core problem: the URL can't be built from settings alone

For GitHub and GitLab the host comes from the provider name (providerHost, util.go:1023). For a native repo the host is the cluster, and the settings don't say which cluster that is. There are three ways to get it:

  1. Store it in settings (recommended): {"provider":"entire","repo":"acme/app-checkpoints","cluster":"aws-us-east-2.entire.io"}. entire configure --checkpoint-remote entire:acme/app-checkpoints would look the repo up once (repo → cluster slug → host through clusterHostBySlug, repo_mirror.go:354) and write the result. Pre-push stays offline and predictable. The cost is a stale cluster if the repo ever moves.
  2. Resolve it from the control plane on every push or fetch. This adds a network call and needs auth inside git hooks, which is fragile and slow.
  3. Reuse origin's cluster when origin is entire://. This only covers people who already use Entire mirrors. It works as a fallback but can't be the only route.

Changes needed

  1. Routing bug to fix first. With an entire provider and a github.com origin, checkPublicForgeMatchesProvider fails. The code then falls through to resolveProviderCheckpointURL, and providerHost("entire") returns false, so checkpoints silently go to origin. That happens in three places in util.go: around line 274 (fetch), around 486/498 (push), and the withToken branch around 240. An entire provider needs its own branch that builds the entire:// URL and never falls back to origin.
  2. Add the provider. Add ProviderEntire and an entire:// builder next to deriveCheckpointURLFromInfo. Its ProtocolEntire case currently requires CanonicalHost == providerHost, which can never hold for et, because et has no upstream host (that's deliberate, per the comment on pathForges in gitremote.go).
  3. Accept it in the flag and the claim command.
    • parseCheckpointRemoteFlag (setup.go:426) and ClaimCheckpointRemoteFlagValue (inherited_claim.go:37) need an entire case.
    • Repo names should be validated with nativeProjectRe/nativeRepoRe. Those live in package cli (repo_clone.go), so they'd need to move to gitremote so checkpoint/remote can use them.
    • TestClaimCommandParsesAsACheckpointRemoteFlag keeps the flag parser and the claim command in step.
    • setup_checkpoint_remote.go:646 (the interactive picker) needs the provider too.
  4. ENTIRE_CHECKPOINT_TOKEN.
    • It's a Basic x-access-token header (git.go:29), and the entire:// helper ignores it.
    • With an entire provider, the token-driven SSH→HTTPS rewrite has to be skipped instead of being sent to origin's host, which is today's fallback.
    • The docs should then point CI users to ENTIRE_TOKEN.
    • One open question: does ENTIRE_TOKEN need to be a separate credential just for checkpoints?
  5. The ownership vote (product decision).
    • checkpointRemoteIsInherited (util.go:633) compares origin's owner with config.Owner(), which for entire would be the project name.
    • With a github.com origin, the cross-forge rule (util.go:679) makes it OwnershipUnprovable. So a committed entire checkpoint remote would be ignored for every GitHub-hosted repo unless each developer puts it in settings.local.json.
    • Options:
      • Accept that.
      • Count an entire://…/et/<same project> origin as ownership.
      • Ask the control plane whether the caller's project owns the mirror of origin. That needs a network call and moves the trust decision onto the server.
  6. Making the repo. The docs require an empty repo created up front. entire repo create (repo_create.go) could be offered from configure when the native repo doesn't exist yet.
  7. Status and explain output, tests, docs.
    • entire status inherited/ignored messaging, remote_topology.go, and explain_remote_discovery.
    • Unit tests for URL derivation in each origin shape (github ssh/https, entire://gh, entire://et, file://, with and without a token).
    • An integration test to go with checkpoint_sync_remote_test.go.
    • Update the docs page.

Questions only the server can answer

  • Does entire.com index checkpoints for repo X when they're stored in native repo Y? If the web UI, search and trails only read checkpoints from the code repo or its mirror, this feature puts data somewhere nothing reads it. Check this before building anything.
  • Cells: does the checkpoint repo's cluster have to match the code repo's home cell? This matters for data residency (EU vs US).

If you want, I can start with item 1 (the misroute to origin). It's a small, self-contained fix that's worth having whatever is decided on the rest.

yeah start with 1

1w ago·9m

Item 1 is fixed in the worktree. Nothing is committed yet. Lint is clean and the Windows vet passes. The full unit suite has one failure, TestOpenCodeSeedRepoPlantsDeps in e2e/agents, which I believe is unrelated: it fails because the installed opencode --version prints "opencode v2.1.2", which the test can't read as a version, and that package's tests don't touch remote routing. I didn't run integration tests or mise run check, which the repo requires before a commit.

The bug: when a checkpoint_remote is yours but its provider has no known host (e.g. entire with a github.com origin), PushURL couldn't build a URL and returned the push remote instead. Pre-push then sent the checkpoints to the code repo, which may be public.

The fix:

  • checkpoint/remote/util.go: in that case PushURL now returns a new error, ErrCheckpointRemoteUnroutable, and no URL.
  • strategy/checkpoint_remote.go: resolvePushSettings records that error.
  • strategy/manual_commit_push.go:
    • Pre-push skips the checkpoint push and prints: [entire] Checkpoints were not pushed and stay local: … Fix checkpoint_remote in …. The checkpoints stay queued and go out once the setting is fixed.
    • PushQueuedCheckpointRefs returns the error instead of pushing.
  • Any other push that names a remote also goes through PushURL, so it now fails instead of misrouting.

Unchanged on purpose:

  • A checkpoint_remote copied in from upstream by a clone or fork still goes to the push remote, as designed.
  • An unknown provider on a self-hosted origin still builds its URL on that host. A test now covers this.

Tests:

  • New TestPushURL_WithholdsWhenProviderHasNoURL covers a github https origin, an ssh origin, an ssh origin with ENTIRE_CHECKPOINT_TOKEN, and an entire://gh origin.
  • New TestPrePushWithholdsCheckpointsWhenTheCheckpointRemoteHasNoURL sets GIT_ALLOW_PROTOCOL=file so a regression can't reach the network. I removed the pre-push guard to check it, and the test failed as it should.
  • I changed the expectation of one existing TestPushURL case. It required the old fallback (non-derivable origin with unknown provider falls back to origin). It came from Paulo's commit 1238aff1e2, which fixed the same misroute for github and gitlab and left unknown providers alone. That looks like leftover behavior rather than a choice, but Paulo may want to confirm.

Two things that behave differently now:

  • entire enable in a repo with such a config now stops with "resolve dedicated checkpoint destination: …" (setup_checkpoint_remote.go:111), where before it went through quietly.
  • Reads still fall back to origin. That's harmless, because the result is already marked as not the real checkpoint store.

Still sends to origin: if the push remote's URL can't be parsed at all (a bare local path), PushURL still falls back to origin. That's an earlier branch I left alone. It's the same kind of misroute, so it could get the same treatment if you want.

Should I commit and open a PR?

so what is this doing now?

1w ago·9.0s

Before, if your checkpoint repo's address couldn't be worked out, Entire pushed the checkpoints to your normal code repo instead. Now it doesn't push them anywhere: they stay on your machine and you get a warning on each push.

When it applies: all three of these have to hold:

  1. A checkpoint_remote is configured.
  2. Entire accepts it as yours. That means it's in settings.local.json, or your remotes have the same owner as the checkpoint repo.
  3. No URL can be built for its provider. Only github and gitlab have a known host. Anything else, such as "provider": "entire", fails unless your origin is self-hosted, in which case its host gets reused.

Before: git push carried your session transcripts to origin, which could be a public GitHub repo, even though you had said they belong somewhere else. All it left was a warning in .entire/logs.

Now:

  • git push still pushes your code normally.
  • No checkpoints are pushed, and every push prints: [entire] Checkpoints were not pushed and stay local: no URL can be derived for the configured checkpoint_remote: provider "entire": … Fix checkpoint_remote in .entire/settings.json or .entire/settings.local.json.
  • The checkpoints stay queued locally and go out on the first push after the setting is fixed.
  • Commands that push checkpoints explicitly (the migration's "push now", attach's re-delivery) fail with that error instead of pushing to origin.

What doesn't change:

  • A checkpoint_remote you inherited from upstream by cloning or forking is still ignored, and checkpoints go to your own push remote, as before.
  • GitHub and GitLab setups work exactly as before.
  • Reads are untouched.

For the entire provider work, this is only a safety step. Today "provider": "entire" lands in this case, so it withholds instead of leaking to origin. Actually routing checkpoints to an Entire repo is still the rest of the list from my first message.

ok, can you open a trail

1w ago·10m

mise run check is still running in the background. When it finishes I'll commit and create the trail.

1w ago·13m

I've opened trail #2665, "Withhold checkpoints when checkpoint_remote has no URL": https://entire.com/gh/entireio/-/trails/2665

  • Branch: the fix is on soph/checkpoint-remote-withhold-unroutable, committed as d736c07a92 and pushed. It's linked to the trail as change cli/1720.
  • Description: it explains the misroute and the fix, and names what stays the same. It calls out three things for reviewers:
    • the existing test case I changed;
    • entire enable now stops with an error on these configs;
    • the unparseable-URL fallback is still there.
  • Tests: unit, integration and the canary all pass locally, with two exceptions, both noted in the description:
    • TestOpenCodeSeedRepoPlantsDeps in e2e/agents fails because of the locally installed OpenCode version.
    • TestHTTPS_PushFailsWithoutToken/git-refs hangs here. It hangs on the base commit f0a1747681 too, so this change didn't cause it, but it's still unexplained. I ran the rest of the integration suite without it.
  • Findings: none yet, but it was created moments ago and review findings may still arrive.

I haven't opened a GitHub PR. Want me to?

can you check the findings

1w ago·8m

The review left two findings on trail #2665. Both were real, and both are fixed in a4c6b1fadf, pushed and resolved.

  1. Attach could report a false success. Attach checks whether a checkpoint was delivered by looking at the push remote. If that remote still had an old copy from before the store was set up, attach printed "Pushed checkpoint metadata" for a checkpoint that went nowhere. Now CheckpointPushTarget returns the withhold error, and attach fails with "written locally but not pushed: …".

  2. Other callers still treated the store as "none configured." I went through each one:

    • entire status said checkpoints sync to origin. It now shows ! Checkpoints NOT syncing: … provider "entire" ….
    • The remote list shown by entire enable and entire doctor counted that remote toward the "several remotes, which one gets checkpoints?" note. Pre-push skips that choice for it, so it's now left out.
    • Checkpoint delete needed no change. It only skips a store that can't hold anything, and deleting stray refs from origin is still correct.
    • The entire enable call sites needed no change. They either show the error or list only destinations that resolved.

Each fix has a test, and I removed each fix in turn to confirm its test then fails. Lint, the Windows vet, the unit tests for the affected packages and the integration suite all pass. Integration still skips TestHTTPS_PushFailsWithoutToken, which hangs on the base commit too.

No new findings have come in since the push, but the review may still run again on the new commit.

This session is being continued from a previous conversation that ran out of context. The summary below covers the earlier portion of the conversation.

Turn 1: user asked what's needed to support "entire" as a checkpoint_remote provider (docs: https://docs.entire.com/guides/checkpoints/store-checkpoints-in-another-repo; supports github/gitlab only)

My assessment:

  • Settings GetCheckpointRemote (cmd/entire/cli/settings/settings.go:~2029) accepts any provider. Native repos are entire://<cluster>/et/<project>/<repo> (gitremote.ForgeNative="et"), served by cmd/git-remote-entire (own auth: login context or ENTIRE_TOKEN).
  • Core problem: cluster host not derivable from provider name (providerHost in checkpoint/remote/util.go only knows github.com/gitlab.com). Recommended storing cluster in settings, resolved at configure time via clusterHostBySlug (repo_mirror.go:354).
  • Todo list: (1) misroute bug — unknown provider fell back to origin; (2) add ProviderEntire + entire:// builder (deriveCheckpointURLFromInfo ProtocolEntire case requires CanonicalHost==providerHost, impossible for et); (3) parseCheckpointRemoteFlag (setup.go:426), ClaimCheckpointRemoteFlagValue (inherited_claim.go), move nativeProjectRe/nativeRepoRe from repo_clone.go to gitremote, setup_checkpoint_remote.go:646; (4) ENTIRE_CHECKPOINT_TOKEN (Basic header, git.go:29) doesn't apply to entire://; (5) ownership vote checkpointRemoteIsInherited (util.go:633) — github origin + entire provider = Unprovable, so committed config is always ignored (product decision); (6) offer entire repo create; (7) status/topology/explain/tests/docs. Open server questions: does entire.com index checkpoints stored in a separate native repo; cell/data residency of the checkpoint repo's cluster.

Turn 2: user said "start with 1" — implemented misroute fix

  • cmd/entire/cli/checkpoint/remote/util.go: added var ErrCheckpointRemoteUnroutable = errors.New("no URL can be derived for the configured checkpoint_remote"); in PushURL, when deriveCheckpointURLFromInfo fails and resolveProviderCheckpointURL fails, return "", true, fmt.Errorf("%w: provider %q: %w", ErrCheckpointRemoteUnroutable, config.Provider, err) instead of resolvePushFallbackURL; doc comment updated; errors import added.
  • cmd/entire/cli/strategy/checkpoint_remote.go: pushSettings.withheld error field; resolvePushSettings sets it on errors.Is(err, remote.ErrCheckpointRemoteUnroutable).
  • cmd/entire/cli/strategy/manual_commit_push.go: prePush after pushDisabled check: if ps.withheld != nil { warnWithheldCheckpointRemote(ps); return nil }; PushQueuedCheckpointRefs returns fmt.Errorf("checkpoint refs stay queued: %w", ps.withheld).
  • cmd/entire/cli/strategy/checkpoint_remote_hint.go: warnWithheldCheckpointRemote prints [entire] Checkpoints were not pushed and stay local: <err>. Fix checkpoint_remote in .entire/settings.json or .entire/settings.local.json. (sanitized).
  • Tests: TestPushURL_WithholdsWhenProviderHasNoURL (github https, ssh, ssh+token, entire://gh origins; local settings provider "entire"), TestPushURL_UnknownProviderOnSelfHostedOriginStillDerives (util_test.go); TestPrePushWithholdsCheckpointsWhenTheCheckpointRemoteHasNoURL (checkpoint_remote_hint_test.go, uses GIT_ALLOW_PROTOCOL=file, gitrepo.OpenPath). Changed existing TestPushURL case "non-derivable origin with unknown provider falls back to origin" → "...withholds rather than falling back to origin" with wantErr: true (origin case from Paulo Gomes commit 1238aff1e2, which left unknown providers on the fallback). FetchURL side unchanged (reads non-authoritative fallback). Not covered: push-remote URL parse-failure branch still falls back to origin. entire enable now errors at setup_checkpoint_remote.go:111 for such configs.
  • Mutation-checked guard.

Turn 3: user asked "so what is this doing now?" — explained behavior (withhold locally + warn instead of pushing to origin; inherited stores and self-hosted origins unchanged).

Turn 4: user asked to open a trail

  • Created branch soph/checkpoint-remote-withhold-unroutable, ran mise run check: lint clean; failures pre-existing/unrelated: TestOpenCodeSeedRepoPlantsDeps (e2e/agents; local opencode prints "opencode v2.1.2"), and TestHTTPS_PushFailsWithoutToken/git-refs hangs (reproduced on base commit f0a1747681 in a temp worktree, so pre-existing; no checkpoint_remote involved). Integration suite with -skip TestHTTPS_PushFailsWithoutToken passes; mise run test:e2e:canary passes.
  • Commit d736c07a92 "fix(checkpoint-remote): withhold checkpoints when the store has no URL".
  • entire trail create --type bug → Trail #2665 "Withhold checkpoints when checkpoint_remote has no URL", https://entire.com/gh/entireio/-/trails/2665, change cli/1720. No GitHub PR opened (offered).

Turn 5: user asked to check findings

Two Medium findings:

  • 01M61JD8RBKG (checkpoint_remote.go:341): CheckpointPushTarget ignored withheld → attach (attach.go:618 checkpointOnRemote, attach.go:1026 pushAttachedCheckpoint) could confirm delivery against push remote. Fixed: CheckpointPushTarget now returns (target, disabled, err) with err=withheld; attach callers handle it (checkpointOnRemote returns false; pushAttachedCheckpoint returns "checkpoint %s was written locally but not pushed: %w").
  • 01M61JD8RQ2R (util.go:515): callers drop enabled on err. Fixed status.go (~539: unroutable → info.Err = purlErr.Error(); return info, rendering "Checkpoints NOT syncing:") and remote_topology.go:107 (dest.pinned = enabled also when unroutable). Judged not bugs: checkpoint_delete.go:469, setup call sites 110/257/372 (surface error), 343/402 (list only resolved).
  • Tests added: TestRunStatus_CheckpointSyncUnroutableStore (status_test.go), TestInspectRemoteTopology_UnroutableStorePins (remote_topology_test.go), CheckpointPushTarget assertion in the prepush withhold test. All three mutation-checked. fmt/lint/Windows vet/unit (cli, strategy, checkpoint/...)/integration (skip hang) passed.
  • Commit a4c6b1fadf "fix(checkpoint-remote): report withheld checkpoints in attach, status, topology", pushed (remote head a4c6b1fadffa1b0fb53afe753a39fa076247e177). Both findings resolved with -m notes. Re-check: "No findings found."

Open threads

  • Possibly re-check trail cli/1720 findings later (new review may run on the push).
  • GitHub PR not opened (user not yet answered).
  • Remaining "entire provider" work items 2–7 and server-side questions; parse-failure fallback branch; pre-existing hang of TestHTTPS_PushFailsWithoutToken/git-refs on this machine.

any update on the trail / PR

1w ago·43.6s

Here's where trail #2665 and draft PR #2947 stand. The draft PR was opened automatically when the trail was created, so you don't need to open one.

  • Trail findings: none open. The two from the last round are resolved, and no new ones came in after the push.
  • CI on a4c6b1fadf: every check passed except Entire Gates, which is still running. notify-slack was skipped.
  • Reviews: none from people yet, and the PR is still a draft. Copilot and Cursor left 6 inline comments, all on the first commit d736c07a92.

Already fixed in a4c6b1fadf (3 comments):

  • Two comments (one Copilot, one Cursor) say CheckpointPushTarget and attach still use the code remote. These match the first trail finding.
  • One comment says status and checkpoint list --outgoing still name the code remote as the destination. The fix in computeCheckpointSyncInfoCounting covers both, since list --outgoing uses that function too.

Still open (3 Copilot comments):

  1. Push remote whose URL doesn't parse (util.go:515). If the push remote is a bare path like /srv/repos/code.git, an earlier branch still falls back to that remote instead of withholding. The PR description already lists this as not covered. It's the same misroute this PR fixes, and the fix is small: run the provider check in that branch too. I'd fix it here.
  2. Checkpoints going out through a normal git push --all, --mirror or explicit refspec (manual_commit_push.go:84). Those commands can include checkpoint refs in the user's own push and skip the privacy filter. That has always been true, including with push_sessions: false, and this PR doesn't change it. Fixing it means rejecting checkpoint refs in the hook's outgoing ref list, which is a separate change. I'd track it separately.
  3. doctor migrate-checkpoints --remote <raw URL> (manual_commit_push.go:471). It pushes to whatever URL or path you pass, even when the configured store is withheld. You named that destination yourself, so I think this is working as intended. At most, the command could print a warning.

My recommendation is to fix #1 on this branch, open a follow-up issue for #2, and leave #3. I haven't changed anything or replied to the comments yet. Should I fix #1?

yeah fix 1

1w ago·16m

I fixed #1 and pushed it as bffb0d02f5 on PR #2947. A push remote whose URL doesn't parse no longer sends checkpoints to origin when you own the configured checkpoint_remote.

  • What changed: this case (a bare path like /srv/repos/app.git, or git@host:app.git with no owner) now follows the same rule as the earlier fix. Checkpoints go to the store on its provider's host, such as github.com. If the provider has no known host, like entire, they stay local and pre-push prints the warning. Both cases now share one helper, routeToProvider in checkpoint/remote/util.go.
  • One existing test pinned the old behavior. A case in TestCheckpointClaimReport (added by Victor Gutierrez in 6678745dd0) has the user confirm acme/checkpoints while origin's URL can't be parsed, and expected checkpoints to still go to origin. That's the misroute Copilot flagged, so I changed the case to expect git@github.com:acme/checkpoints.git. Victor may want to look at it during review.
  • New tests: a bare-path push remote with an entire provider stays local, and with a github provider it reaches github.com. I put the origin fallback back temporarily and both tests failed.
  • Checks: lint, the Windows vet, the cli unit tests, integration and the canary all passed. Integration still skips TestHTTPS_PushFailsWithoutToken, which hangs here on the base commit too. One cli/api test failed once because a connection was cut mid-request; it passed on three reruns and doesn't touch this code.
  • Trail and PR: I updated the trail description. It no longer lists this case as not covered, and it now names the git push --all/--mirror issue as a follow-up. On the PR I resolved 4 bot threads without replying: this one, plus the 3 already fixed in a4c6b1fadf. Left open: push --all/--mirror (no follow-up issue filed yet) and migrate-checkpoints --remote.

The trail shows no findings so far, but its review and CI on the new commit are still running. I'll check the findings again once they finish.

can you look agaain

1w ago·15.9s

Nothing new has come in since the push of bffb0d02f5.

  • Trail findings: none on cli/1720.
  • CI: everything has passed except Entire Gates, which is still running. notify-slack was skipped, as before.
  • Bot reviews: Copilot and Cursor have only reviewed the first commit (d736c07a92) and haven't run on either later push. So no automated reviewer has looked at the last two commits yet.
  • Open threads: two, both ones I left open on purpose:
    • git push --all/--mirror/explicit refspecs can still carry checkpoint refs in your own push. That was already true before this PR, and I've marked it as a follow-up in the trail description.
    • doctor migrate-checkpoints --remote <raw URL> pushes to the URL you pass even when the configured store holds checkpoints back. I'd call that working as intended, since you named the destination yourself.

Do you want me to file the push --all/--mirror follow-up as an issue? I'll check findings once more after Entire Gates finishes.

what could we even do in the git push case, if you push all refs, you push all refs

1w ago·26.4s

You're mostly right. --mirror and an explicit refspec are you choosing to push those refs, and Entire shouldn't second-guess that.

The one case I'd still take seriously is git push --all on the git-branch backend. That backend stores checkpoints in a normal local branch, entire/checkpoints/v1 (paths.MetadataBranchName). --all pushes every branch, so it sends your transcripts along with your code. Someone running --all means "all my branches" and probably doesn't know that one holds their transcripts. The refs backend keeps checkpoints under refs/entire/…, so --all never picks them up there.

What's possible is limited:

  • We can't drop a ref from the push. A pre-push hook can only let the whole push through or stop it. Stopping it means a user running --mirror can't push their code at all.
  • We can't always see what's being pushed. Git passes the list of refs to the hook, but our hook only reads it when the hook script sets PrePushStdinRefsEnv (hooks_git_cmd.go:257). So we can't reliably detect it.
  • This PR didn't create the problem. With a dedicated checkpoint_remote that works fine, --all already copies the checkpoint branch into the code repo, and it skips the privacy-filter rewrite that only our own push runs. The same happens with push_sessions: false. A withheld store just makes it more noticeable.

So the most we could do is print a warning when we can see a checkpoint ref heading somewhere other than the checkpoint store. A real fix would be the git-branch backend not using a branch at all, which is the refs backend.

My take is no fix and no issue for this PR. I'd resolve the thread with a short note saying it predates the change and that ref-level filtering isn't possible from pre-push. I'd also drop the follow-up line from the trail description. Do you want me to do both?

what's the status here

6d ago·22.9s

Nothing new has come in on the PR or the trail since yesterday, but main has moved and the PR no longer merges cleanly.

  • Merge conflict: main is 161 commits ahead, and #2947 now conflicts with it in cmd/entire/cli/attach.go and cmd/entire/cli/strategy/manual_commit_push.go. status.go and checkpoint_remote.go still merge without conflicts. This needs a rebase before anything else.
  • Trail cli/1720: no findings.
  • CI on bffb0d02f5: every check passed except Entire Gates. It has said "in progress" since 15:33 yesterday, more than a day, so it's probably waiting on something (likely the trail review or an approval) rather than actually running.
  • Reviews: no human reviews, and the PR is still a draft. The two bots only ever reviewed the first commit.
  • Open threads: two, both waiting on your call from last turn.
    • git push --all/--mirror: I proposed resolving it with a short note saying the problem predates this PR and that a pre-push hook can't drop individual refs. I'd also remove the follow-up line from the trail description.
    • migrate-checkpoints --remote <raw URL>: I'd leave the behavior as it is.

Should I rebase onto main and resolve the conflicts? That includes re-running the checks and force-pushing. And should I resolve the two threads as described?

yes, please do

6d ago·10m

I rebased onto main and fixed a new hole the rebase turned up, but nothing is pushed yet. Permissions blocked both the force-push and the PR thread reply.

Rebase (local only): the branch is on current main as 4 commits.

  • manual_commit_push.go: main added a delivery-policy check where ours goes. I kept both, main's first.
  • attach.go: same kind of overlap. I kept main's policy handling and added ours right after the push_sessions check.

A new hole from main, now fixed: main's manual entire checkpoint push (PushCheckpoints) never checked our withhold. With an unroutable store, it would have sent the checkpoints you name to the code remote. It now stops with the error and leaves the refs queued. flushCheckpointRefs also refuses a withheld store, so a future caller can't reopen the path. I removed each guard in turn and the test failed both times. This is commit 6189d4f403.

Checks: fmt, lint, the Windows vet, all unit tests, integration and the canary pass. The exceptions are the same as before: TestOpenCodeSeedRepoPlantsDeps fails because of the opencode version installed here, and integration skips TestHTTPS_PushFailsWithoutToken, which hangs on the base commit too.

What I need from you:

  1. Force-push. The rebase rewrote the branch, so it needs git push --force-with-lease. Run ! git push --force-with-lease yourself, or allow it and I'll push and then check findings.
  2. The migrate-checkpoints thread. Posting the reply was blocked. The note I'd post: "Leaving as is: --remote <url> is the user naming the destination for this one command, so it is honored like an explicit git push <url>. The withhold covers the configured store, not destinations given on the command line." You can post it yourself, or allow it, or I can just resolve the thread without a note.

The --all thread needs a fresh decision, so I didn't resolve it. Main added CheckOuterPushHeldCheckpoints, which refuses your own git push when it carries checkpoints the manual push policy holds back. That covers --mirror, refs/entire refspecs and the v1 branch, which is the "refuse the whole push" option I'd called too hostile. So Copilot's fix now exists for the manual policy. I'd still keep it out of this PR, for two reasons:

  • That check covers the whole clone and deliberately ignores branch settings, while whether a store is withheld depends on which remote you push to.
  • With a dedicated store that works fine, --all still copies checkpoints into the code repo, and nothing refuses that either.

My recommendation is to resolve the thread with a note pointing at CheckOuterPushHeldCheckpoints as the place a follow-up would extend.

can you look at the new findings

yesterday·12m

I've fixed all four new findings, but none of it is pushed yet, so I haven't resolved them on the trail. All four were raised against bffb0d02f5, the commit from before the rebase.

What I found and fixed:

  • Medium, util.go:516: my unparseable-push-remote fix sent a self-hosted setup's checkpoints to github.com. With origin on ghe.corp.example and a local-path push remote, it built the store URL on github.com instead of origin's host. Now, when the push remote's URL doesn't parse, the store URL is built from origin's transport first, so it stays at git@ghe.corp.example:acme/checkpoints.git. It falls back to the provider's host only when origin doesn't parse either.
  • Low, setup_checkpoint_remote.go:258: entire enable printed the raw error with no next step. The error now ends with "set checkpoint_remote to a github or gitlab repository, or remove it, in .entire/settings.json or .entire/settings.local.json". Enable, status and attach print that error as-is, so all three show it. I removed the pre-push warning's own fix line so the guidance doesn't appear twice.
  • Low, status.go:546: a remote URL containing terminal escape bytes reached entire status output. The error used to include the parse failure message, which quotes the remote URL. That message now goes to the log only. The provider name is printed with %q, so control bytes are escaped.
  • Low, checkpoint_remote_hint_test.go:261: the withhold test couldn't catch a real leak. The tests now push to a local bare repo with a checkpoint queued, and assert nothing arrives. With the old origin fallback restored, a checkpoint does reach the bare repo and the test fails.

A side effect of that last test: it showed the push is blocked three times over. Pre-push stops it, the flush function stops it, and the low-level push looks up its target again and gets the same refusal. Removing either of the first two alone doesn't leak; only reverting the PushURL fix does. Each of the other new tests also fails when its fix is removed.

The local branch is now 5 commits on top of current main, ending at 27a9bc78d9.

Two things block the push:

  1. Force-push permission. The rebase rewrote the branch, and auto mode blocked git push --force-with-lease last time.
  2. SSH access. git fetch just failed with Permission denied (publickey), so your SSH agent may be locked or empty. A plain push would probably fail the same way.

If you run ! git push --force-with-lease once SSH works again, I'll resolve the four findings with notes and re-check the trail. The two decisions from last time are still open: the migrate-checkpoints thread note (posting was blocked) and how to close the --all thread.

please do a force push, then resolve findings

yesterday·1m

The branch is force-pushed and all four findings are resolved, each with a note naming the fix and its test. No findings are open on the trail now.

  • Push: SSH still refused your key, so I pushed over HTTPS using the GitHub CLI's login instead. The push was set to fail if the branch on GitHub had moved off bffb0d02f5; it hadn't. GitHub's branch and PR #2947 are now at 27a9bc78d9, which is the rebase onto main plus the three fix commits.
  • Next: the new push will start CI and probably another trail review, so new findings may still come in. Your SSH key also needs fixing before the next normal git push.

Still open from earlier:

  • The trail description doesn't mention the manual entire checkpoint push fix (6189d4f403) yet. Want me to add it?
  • The migrate-checkpoints thread is still waiting for its reply note.
  • How to close the --all thread is still your call.

This session is being continued from a previous conversation that ran out of context. The summary below covers the earlier portion of the conversation.

<system-reminder> <tools-used-before-summary>Bash, Edit, Read, ToolSearch, WebFetch</tools-used-before-summary> </system-reminder> Summary: 1. Primary Request and Intent: - Original arc (before the earlier compaction): the user asked what supporting "entire" as a `checkpoint_remote` provider would need, then said "start with 1": fix the misroute where an owned `checkpoint_remote` with no derivable URL fell back to the push remote. They then asked to open a trail (#2665, change cli/1720, auto-created draft PR #2947) and to fix the findings. - In this segment the user asked, in order: - for a trail/PR update; - to fix Copilot's issue #1 (unparseable push remote); - to look again; - what we could even do about `git push --all`; - for the status; - "yes, please do": rebase onto main, resolve conflicts, force-push, and resolve the two open threads as I proposed; - to look at the new findings; - finally: "please do a force push, then resolve findings". - Constraints that still apply (from CLAUDE.md and memory): - Never hard-wrap prose: one paragraph per line in PR, issue and trail bodies and in markdown. - Commit or push only when asked. - `mise run check` (or its components) before every commit; `mise run lint` on the current tree before any push. - After every push to an open PR or trail, run `entire trail finding list cli/<n> --freshness any`, fix the real findings, resolve them with `-m`, and re-check. - Don't run real-agent E2E tests; the Vogon canary is fine. - Leave `entire enable`/`disable`/`clean`/`auth` to the user. - Don't post PR, issue or trail comments unless asked in that message. - Resolve fixed threads and findings silently, with no reply comments. - Run `GOOS=windows go vet` before pushing. - Mutation-check every guard test. - Commit trailer: `Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>`. PR bodies end with `🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)`. - The git stash is shared across worktrees: never use bare stash or pop.
  1. Key Technical Concepts:

    • remote.PushURL(ctx, pushRemoteName) (url, enabled, err):
      • Ownership vote in checkpointRemoteIsInherited: Ours, Unprovable or Disproved. settings.local.json makes the store Ours (CheckpointRemoteIsLocalOnly).
      • ErrCheckpointRemoteUnroutable means withhold: never fall back to the push remote.
    • pushSettings.withheld, set by resolvePushSettings. Checked in:
      • prePush;
      • PushQueuedCheckpointRefs;
      • CheckpointPushTarget (returns (target, disabled, err));
      • PushCheckpoints (new);
      • flushCheckpointRefs (new, as a second layer).
    • Defense in depth: even with both strategy guards removed, the low-level push re-resolves its target through PushURL ("resolve push target") and refuses. Only the PushURL fix itself stops a real leak.
    • Main added a checkpoint push policy (automatic or manual, via automaticCheckpointDelivery and ErrCheckpointPushHeldByPolicy) and CheckOuterPushHeldCheckpoints. The latter refuses the user's own push when it carries checkpoint content the manual policy holds back (--mirror, refs/entire, the v1 branch); it is clone-wide and doesn't read branch settings.
    • Backends:
      • git-branch: entire/checkpoints/v1 is a refs/heads branch, so git push --all sends it. The empty-remote guard defers its push to an empty remote.
      • git-refs: per-checkpoint refs under refs/entire/, with a push queue.
    • PrePushStdinRefsEnv: the hook reads git's ref list only when the hook script replays stdin.
    • SSH to github.com currently fails with Permission denied (publickey). HTTPS push works via -c credential.helper= -c credential.helper='!gh auth git-credential'.
  2. Files and Code Sections:

    • cmd/entire/cli/checkpoint/remote/util.go (PushURL):
      • The parse-failure branch now uses origin's transport, then the provider:
      • The deriveCheckpointURLFromInfo failure also returns routeToProvider(ctx, config, err).
      • New helper:
    • cmd/entire/cli/checkpoint/remote/util_test.go:
      • TestPushURL_WithholdsWhenProviderHasNoURL gained a "bare path push remote" case (pushPath field; remote "local").
      • TestPushURL_BarePathPushRemoteRoutesToProvider is now a table, with the push remote "local" at /srv/repos/app.git:
        • github https origin → https://github.com/acme/checkpoints.git;
        • self-hosted git@ghe.corp.example:acme/app.git → git@ghe.corp.example:acme/checkpoints.git;
        • origin /srv/repos/origin.git → git@github.com:acme/checkpoints.git.
      • New TestPushURL_UnroutableErrorQuotesNoRemoteURL: origin is "host:\x1b]0;PWNED\x07". It asserts the error has no \x1b or "PWNED" and contains the remedy text.
    • cmd/entire/cli/checkpoint_remote_claim_test.go: the case was renamed to "confirmed with unparseable push URL". It now expects "Checkpoint uploads use the dedicated destination: git@github.com:acme/checkpoints.git" and not "uploaded when you push to origin". The case comes from Victor Gutierrez's 6678745dd0.
    • cmd/entire/cli/strategy/manual_commit_push.go:
      • Rebase conflict in PushQueuedCheckpointRefs: kept main's automaticCheckpointDelivery check first, then if ps.withheld != nil { return 0, false, fmt.Errorf("checkpoint refs stay queued: %w", ps.withheld) }.
      • Added a guard at the top of flushCheckpointRefs:
    • cmd/entire/cli/strategy/checkpoint_push_policy.go (PushCheckpoints): after the pushDisabled check, added if ps.withheld != nil { return CheckpointPushReport{}, fmt.Errorf("checkpoint refs stay queued: %w", ps.withheld) }.
    • cmd/entire/cli/attach.go: rebase conflict in pushAttachedCheckpoint(ctx, w, plan attachLinkPlan, checkpointID). Main's version takes plan, with policyErr and heldForManualPush. The order is now: disabled → withhold err → plan.policyErr → heldForManualPush. checkpointOnRemote is unchanged and still checks err == nil.
    • cmd/entire/cli/strategy/checkpoint_remote_hint.go: the warning is now just "[entire] Checkpoints were not pushed and stay local: %s.\n", sanitized. The "Fix checkpoint_remote…" sentence was removed because the error now carries it.
    • cmd/entire/cli/strategy/checkpoint_remote_hint_test.go:
      • Added a plumbing import.
      • New helper withheldStoreRepo(t) (dir, bare string, refs []plumbing.ReferenceName):
        • built on setupRepoWithNCheckpointRefs(t, 1), with origin set to the bare dir;
        • settings.json is {"enabled": true, "checkpoints": {"primary": {"type": "git-refs"}}};
        • settings.local.json sets provider entire, repo acme/checkpoints;
        • t.Chdir, ClearWorktreeRootCache, GIT_ALLOW_PROTOCOL=file, then enqueueRefs.
      • TestPrePushWithholdsCheckpointsWhenTheCheckpointRemoteHasNoURL: PrePush first, then assertRefsAbsentFromRemote(bare, refs), the stderr text, the ps.withheld check, CheckpointPushTarget, PushQueuedCheckpointRefs, and flushCheckpointRefs, then absence again.
      • New TestPushCheckpointsWithholdsWhenTheCheckpointRemoteHasNoURL: PushCheckpoints(ctx, []CheckpointPushRequest{{Ref: refs[0]}}) returns the unroutable error, and nothing lands in the bare repo.
    • Also read but not changed: cmd/entire/cli/remote_topology.go, setup_checkpoint_remote.go (enable call sites at lines 110, 257, 314, 344, 377 and 407), hooks_git_cmd.go:257, push_common.go (pushRefIfNeeded), refs_push_bounds_test.go and refs_push_test.go (helpers).
  3. Errors and fixes:

    • The TestCheckpointClaimReport unparseable-transport case pinned the old origin fallback; I updated it to expect the dedicated store.
    • The new withhold test didn't catch a regression at first, for three reasons in turn:
      • The bare repo was empty, which triggers the empty-remote defer.
      • The git-branch push was rejected anyway.
      • The low-level push re-resolves through PushURL. I switched to git-refs with a queued ref and confirmed the test fails when the PushURL fix is reverted. I reordered the asserts so the bare-repo check runs first.
    • plumbing was undefined in the test; added the import.
    • A sed/python mutation failed to apply or compile; redone with line-specific sed.
    • Auto mode denied the force-push ([Git Destructive]) and the GitHub GraphQL thread reply ([External System Writes]). The user then explicitly asked for the force-push.
    • SSH push failed with publickey. I pushed over HTTPS with the gh credential helper and --force-with-lease=soph/checkpoint-remote-withhold-unroutable:bffb0d02f5. Confirmed with ls-remote: branch and refs/pull/2947/head are both 27a9bc78d9. The gh pr view result lagged behind.
    • Known unrelated failures:
      • TestOpenCodeSeedRepoPlantsDeps (local opencode 2);
      • TestHTTPS_PushFailsWithoutToken/git-refs hangs (pre-existing; skipped);
      • one cli/api CloseIdleConnections flake that passed on rerun.
  4. Problem Solving:

    • Commits on the rebased branch, on top of main 54b6a5cac3:
      • e5e8f85c56 withhold;
      • 56fc4b75cb attach/status/topology;
      • 980f48ca9b route unparseable push remotes;
      • 6189d4f403 withhold from the manual checkpoint push;
      • 27a9bc78d9 keep path push remotes on origin's host, plus actionable withhold and a sanitized error.
    • Verification before the final commit: fmt, lint (0 issues), GOOS=windows go vet ./..., all unit tests (only the opencode failure), integration with the hanging test skipped, and the canary all passed.
    • Every new guard and test was mutation-checked.
    • Trail findings resolved, each with a -m note:
      • Earlier: 01M61JD8RBKG, 01M61JD8RQ2R.
      • Now: 01M6K0N0CE1R (self-hosted host), 01M6K0N47S8E (enable next step), 01M6K0N7KR5J (bare-repo test), 01M6K0NAYNG1 (escape bytes).
      • Current list: "No findings found."
    • GitHub threads:
      • Resolved: PRRT_kwDOQyo98M6xMmI1, …MmLX, …MmMP, …Mmuv.
      • Still open: PRRT_kwDOQyo98M6xMmJ4 (git push --all/--mirror) and PRRT_kwDOQyo98M6xMmKj (migrate-checkpoints --remote raw URL).
    • The trail description was updated after bffb0d02f5. It now says the unparseable case "takes the same route: the provider's host, or withhold", and lists the --all/--mirror follow-up. It doesn't yet mention the PushCheckpoints fix, the origin-host-first change, or the new error text.
  5. All user messages:

    • "any update on the trail / PR"
    • "yeah fix 1"
    • "can you look agaain"
    • "what could we even do in the git push case, if you push all refs, you push all refs"
    • "what's the status here"
    • "yes, please do"
    • "can you look at the new findings"
    • "please do a force push, then resolve findings"
  6. Pending Tasks:

    • Report the result of the force-push and the finding resolution to the user.
    • Re-check trail findings after the new review on 27a9bc78d9 runs; fix any real ones.
    • The migrate-checkpoints thread (PRRT_kwDOQyo98M6xMmKj): the user approved resolving it with the note "Leaving as is: --remote <url> is the user naming the destination for this one command, so it is honored like an explicit git push <url>. The withhold covers the configured store, not destinations given on the command line." Posting was blocked, and it is still unresolved.
    • The --all thread (PRRT_kwDOQyo98M6xMmJ4) needs the user's decision given main's CheckOuterPushHeldCheckpoints. My recommendation: resolve it with a note pointing to that function as the follow-up extension point.
    • Possibly update the trail #2665 description with the newer changes. Use entire trail update cli/1720 --body, one paragraph per line.
    • Watch CI and Entire Gates on the new head.
  7. Current Work: The user said "please do a force push, then resolve findings". The SSH push failed with publickey, so I pushed over HTTPS:

    The result was + bffb0d02f5...27a9bc78d9 (forced update), and ls-remote confirms 27a9bc78d9 for the branch and refs/pull/2947/head. I then resolved all four findings with entire trail finding resolve cli/1720 <id> -m "<note>", and entire trail finding list cli/1720 --freshness any now returns "No findings found." The final message reporting this hasn't been written yet.

  8. Optional Next Step: Tell the user what happened after "please do a force push, then resolve findings":

    • The force-push went over HTTPS because SSH still fails with publickey; the remote is now at 27a9bc78d9.
    • All four findings are resolved and the trail shows no findings.
    • CI and the trail review will rerun on the new head, and I'll re-check findings afterwards.
    • The two GitHub threads (migrate-checkpoints note, --all decision) are still waiting on the user, since posting replies was blocked earlier.

can you check for any update

yesterday·3m

The review side is clear, but CI on 27a9bc78d9 is red for two reasons that have nothing to do with the code in this PR.

  • Trail: no findings, and the agent review found nothing blocking. There's 1 approval on the trail.
  • GitHub threads: the same two are still unresolved: --all/--mirror (PRRT_kwDOQyo98M6xMmJ4) and migrate-checkpoints --remote (PRRT_kwDOQyo98M6xMmKj). No new review comments came in.
  • CI: lint, unit, integration, Windows, canaries and CodeQL all pass. Four checks fail, but only two are real failures; the other two are knock-ons:
    • complexity-gate: fails with no task complexity:gate found. Main's CI now runs that step, but its script (mise-tasks/complexity/gate, from #2340) isn't in this branch, which is based on 54b6a5cac3. Rebasing onto current main (5db73ffc6b) should fix it.
    • controlplane: login failed: browser approval: login stalled on github.com/login/oauth/authorize for 1m0s. The GitHub sign-in timed out before any test ran, so it's not this PR's code; a rerun should clear it.
    • test fails only because complexity-gate failed.
    • Entire Gates fails only because CI failed.

Should I rebase onto main and force-push again over HTTPS? That clears complexity-gate and reruns controlplane. Otherwise I can just rerun controlplane, but complexity-gate will stay red without the rebase. The two threads are still waiting on you either way.

can you also update the PR description

yesterday·2m

I've updated the PR #2947 description to cover the whole branch. The trail link, the entire-shadow-pr marker and Cursor's auto-generated summary at the bottom are left as they were.

New in the description since the last version:

  • the manual entire checkpoint push is now covered by the withhold too;
  • a push remote with a plain path or unparseable URL now uses origin's host before falling back to the provider's;
  • the error tells the user what to change and no longer prints the remote's URL;
  • the new tests push to a real local repository and check that nothing arrives there;
  • what's out of scope: git push --all/--mirror, which could later be handled in main's CheckOuterPushHeldCheckpoints, and why migrate-checkpoints --remote <url> is left alone.

Cursor's summary is from an old commit (d736c07a), so it no longer matches; Cursor normally rewrites it on its next review.

Other updates since last time:

  • The branch on GitHub was already rebased onto main (5db73ffc6b), so its head is now 67eb4614 with the same five commits. My local copy is still on the old commits, because resetting it was blocked as destructive. If you want it synced, run ! git reset --hard origin/soph/checkpoint-remote-withhold-unroutable after a fetch.

  • The complexity gate now fails for real. Two functions are over its limit of 30:

    • prePush in strategy/manual_commit_push.go scores 34, up from 33 because of the withhold check.
    • computeCheckpointSyncInfoCounting in status.go scores 32, up from 28 because of the "not syncing" branch.

    Both can be fixed by moving the new branch into a small helper. That means a new commit and another force-push, so I haven't done it yet. Should I go ahead?

  • The trail #2665 description is still the older version. I can make it match the PR.

can you look at the complexity gate gailure in CI

yesterday·5m

I fixed the complexity gate failure in your working tree; nothing is committed or pushed yet. It failed on two functions that this PR's withhold branches pushed over the limit of 30. With each branch moved into a small helper, mise run complexity:gate passes locally against main ("no new or worsened function over cognitive complexity 30").

FunctionCI scoreChange
prePush (strategy/manual_commit_push.go)34, main has 33Its two early returns (sessions push disabled, store withheld) are now one call to a new skipsCheckpointPush(ps) in checkpoint_remote_hint.go. That helper also prints the withhold warning.
computeCheckpointSyncInfoCounting (status.go)32, main has 28The "is the configured store in use" decision moved into a new dedicatedCheckpointStoreInUse(ctx, s, electedName, &info). It returns (dedicated, done). The function itself now does one if done { return info }.

Neither change alters behaviour. The strategy, checkpoint-remote and status/attach/topology/claim tests pass, as do mise run lint (0 issues) and GOOS=windows go vet ./....

To get here I rebased my local branch onto main (5db73ffc6b), matching what GitHub already had. The five commits are unchanged, but their hashes differ from the remote's, so pushing from this branch as-is would need another force-push.

Should I commit and push it? I'd put the fix commit on top of the remote's 67eb4614, so the push is a plain fast-forward and the other three CI failures re-run.

yes, do it

yesterday·7m

Everything passes. Committing, then putting the same tree on top of the remote's 67eb4614 so the push is a fast-forward:
