Reviewed PR #2374 (fix/e2e-empty-test-runs). I checked out the branch, built the reporter, and probed the behaviours rather than reading only.

Verdict

The core fix is right and well-targeted. An unmatched -run regex now exits 1 through all three tasks with a NO TESTS RAN report still written to the artifact dir — I reproduced the old false success and the new failure. Three smaller things, one of which I'd want changed before merge.

Findings

1. The INCOMPLETE banner hides real failures — e2e/cmd/testreport/main.go:272

incomplete > 0 is the first arm of the footer switch, so it wins over failed > 0. Fed a stream with one failed parent and one interrupted one:

No 💥 FAILED 💥. That combination is exactly what a -timeout=30m panic or a killed test binary produces — the most common way a real E2E run ends non-cleanly — so the loud failure banner disappears in precisely the artifact someone is opening to find out what broke. Exit codes are unaffected (gotestsum's rc still takes precedence in the tasks), so this is a readability regression, not a correctness one. I'd put failed > 0 first and fold the incomplete count into the same banner (💥 FAILED (0/2 passed, 1 incomplete) 💥); the mixed complete and incomplete test case only asserts INCOMPLETE appears and TESTS PASSED doesn't, so a combined banner still satisfies it.

2. The two new banners are never colorized — same switch

FAILED and ALL n TESTS PASSED honour color; INCOMPLETE and NO TESTS RAN are written plain even in the -color file. Verified with cat -v. The new banners are the ones that most want to be loud.

3. The new test's failure assertion breaks on Windows — main_test.go:63

The reporter prints the path with %q, which escapes backslashes: "C:\\Users\\...\\events.json" never contains the raw C:\Users\...\events.json. Confirmed. The test branches on runtime.GOOS == "windows" for the binary suffix, so it's meant to run there, but CI's Windows job only runs ./cmd/entire/cli/... with -run '(Windows|MSYS)' — so it's latent and only bites a developer running it locally on Windows. strings.Contains(string(out), fmt.Sprintf("%q", events)) fixes it.

Nits: canary uses || vogon_rc=1 where the other two use || report_rc=$? (harmless, canary collapses to exit 1 anyway, but inconsistent); reading from stdin renders no tests completed in ""; the README's "Nightly retains its / existing report check" breaks a line oddly early.

Verified as correct

  • The run-resets-action change is safe on the real rerun path. This was my main worry. I ran actual gotestsum --rerun-fails=1 against a flaky module: the parent stream is run … fail … run … pass and the reporter reports pass; a test not selected by the rerun keeps its earlier result. pause/cont correctly don't reset.
  • Nightly's grep -q '^Total: 0 ' still matches — the header is unchanged up to and past the two spaces, with Incomplete: appended on a new line. And the stated reason for keeping that check is right: nightly pins its checkout to the nightly tag, so its mise tasks can predate the flag.
  • The report is written before the strict exit, so the artifact survives the new failure mode.
  • The cat … || true additions fix a real pre-existing bug: under set -eu, a missing entire-version.txt aborted the task before it printed the artifact path or its own exit code.
  • shellcheck 0.11.0 clean on all three tasks, golangci-lint 0 issues, go test ./e2e/cmd/testreport/... passes.

Want me to post these as inline PR comments?

are those in scope or feature creep?

1mo ago·27.4s

Fair challenge. Re-checking each against "is this a defect in the code being added" rather than "is this something I'd like":

#1 is in scope, and it's the only one I'd hold the PR for. It's a regression the diff introduces, not a pre-existing gap. On main the footer is if failed > 0 { FAILED } else { PASSED }, so 1 failure + 1 incomplete printed 💥 FAILED 💥. After this PR the same stream prints INCOMPLETE and no failure banner. The PR author added the INCOMPLETE arm and put it first; that's theirs to answer for.

#3 is in scope but minor. It's a wrong assertion in a test file the PR adds — strings.Contains(out, events) can't match a %q-escaped Windows path. Not feature creep (I'm not asking for Windows support; the test already branches on runtime.GOOS), but CI never runs it there, so it's a cheap fix, not a blocker.

#2 was over-weighted by me. Numbering it alongside a regression implied more than it deserves. It's polish on two new lines, and plain-vs-colored for INCOMPLETE is arguably a deliberate call — it isn't necessarily an error state. Nit at most.

The stdin "" message is closest to actual creep — all three call sites pass a path, so nobody reaches it. Drop it. The canary || vogon_rc=1 inconsistency and the README line break are nits I'd only mention in passing.

Worth noting what I didn't ask for, since that's where creep would have lived: the PR explicitly scopes out "a regex matching a parent but no subtests," doesn't make the flag the default, and leaves the shell tasks untested. All three are defensible, and I didn't push on any of them.

So: one blocking item, one cheap fix, the rest is noise I should have kept out. Want me to post just #1 and #3?

post the block and cheap as finding on the trail please

1mo ago·2m

Both posted to trail #1307, each with a verified --patch attached:

IDSevLocationIssue
01M285739H6JHighe2e/cmd/testreport/main.go:273incomplete > 0 outranks failed > 0, so a timeout/panic run prints no FAILED banner — a regression the diff introduces
01M2857DDNXALowe2e/cmd/testreport/main_test.go:63%q escapes backslashes, so the "names the input" assertion can never match a Windows temp path

Both patches were applied, built, and run before posting: the reorder leaves every existing table case on the same arm (all have failed == 0), go test ./e2e/cmd/testreport/... passes with each, and the fail+incomplete stream now renders 💥 FAILED (0/2 passed, 1 incomplete) 💥. The working tree is back to the PR head, unmodified.

I left out the colorization nit, the canary || vogon_rc=1 inconsistency, the stdin "" message, and the README line break — on your read they're polish rather than defects, and posting them would have diluted the one that matters.

Replied to cli-90 with the one PR this session touched:

entireio/cli#2374 — REVIEWED, OPEN, checks fail, review REVIEW_REQUIRED.

The only red check is Entire Gates; all 16 others (lint, test-core, three integration shards, both canary backends, test-windows, CodeQL, licenses, binary-size) are green. Both findings I filed on trail 1307 are still open — the high-severity banner-precedence one and the low-severity Windows assertion — and the PR hasn't been pushed to since 2026-09-11, so nine days with no response from the author.

what's the status here

3d ago·1m

Nothing has moved on the PR since I reviewed it, but the ground under it has shifted.

PR entireio/cli#2374 — still OPEN, now conflicted

Head is still e7d5564e9, updatedAt still 2026-09-11. Seven weeks, no push from the author. What changed is main: mergeStateStatus has gone from BLOCKED to DIRTY. A test merge conflicts in two of the six files:

  • e2e/README.md
  • mise-tasks/test/e2e/_default

(mise-tasks/test/e2e/canary auto-merges.) The e2e area has been busy — Gemini CLI removed, the antigravity leg added, the Windows canary sharded onto a Dev Drive, OpenCode cache repair, codex pin added then dropped.

The bug it fixes is still live on main. _default, canary, and roger-roger all still call testreport with no -fail-on-empty, and main.go has no NO TESTS RAN arm. Nothing superseded it.

Findings: 5 open, mine plus three later ones

IDSevLocation
01M285739H6JHighmain.go:273 — mine, FAILED banner suppressed by the INCOMPLETE arm
01M32V7FE6K7Mediummain.go:82 — -fail-on-empty detects incompleteness but never gates on it
01M32V71PC7YMediummain_test.go:42 — two table gaps found by mutation testing
01M2857DDNXALowmain_test.go:63 — mine, %q vs raw Windows path
01M32V7H2AKGLowREADME.md:109 — the orphan line break I'd decided to skip

Someone ran a second review pass in late September and filed the three 01M32V7… ones. The Medium at main.go:82 is adjacent to my High — same completedParent/ContainsFunc logic — so whoever picks this up should read them together.

One thing to know about addressing

Trail numbering was re-scoped from per-repo to per-project, and the web origin moved to entire.com. What I called "trail 1307" is now trail #1656 at https://entire.com/gh/entireio/-/trails/1656, with cli/1307 as the change inside it. entire trail show 1307 today returns an unrelated trail ("Fix/graph command casing"), so the old URL in my earlier summaries and in the cross-session report to cli-90 no longer resolves to this work.

Gates agree with GitHub: Mergeable: no, Conflicts: conflicting.

The worktree is clean and still parked on pr2374 at the PR head. Want me to rebase it onto main and resolve the two conflicts, or leave it for the author?

This session is being continued from a previous conversation that ran out of context. The summary below covers the earlier portion of the conversation.

<system-reminder> <tools-used-before-summary>Bash, SendMessage, ToolSearch</tools-used-before-summary> </system-reminder> Summary: ## Session Overview

The user asked me to review GitHub PR https://github.com/entireio/cli/pull/2374 in the entireio/cli repo. Work took place in the git worktree /Users/soph/.herdr/worktrees/cli/worktree-lucky-meadow-aaec, where I checked out the PR branch locally as pr2374.

User Instructions / Constraints Stated in This Session

  • "can you review: https://github.com/entireio/cli/pull/2374#top" — the initial review request.
  • "are those in scope or feature creep?" — a challenge asking me to justify my findings against the PR's scope.
  • "post the block and cheap as finding on the trail please" — explicit authorization to post only the blocking finding and the cheap-fix finding as trail findings (not PR comments).
  • A cross-session message arrived from another Claude session (cli-90, address uds:/tmp/cc-socks/38831.sock) requesting a read-only PR status report. It explicitly stated: "Read-only: do not push, comment, merge, close, or change any files." I complied.
  • Final user message: "what's the status here".

Standing constraints from global CLAUDE.md and project instructions that remain in force: never hard-wrap prose (one paragraph per line in PR/issue bodies, comments, and markdown docs); leave setup/destructive commands (enable, disable, clean, auth) to the user; post trail feedback as findings, never trail comments; don't post PR/issue/trail comments unless asked in that message; in the entiredb repo only, mise run dev:prereqs is pre-approved.

PR #2374 Under Review

  • Title: "Fail E2E tasks when the test regex selects no tests"
  • Author: gtrrz-victor; branch fix/e2e-empty-test-runs → main; +153/−15, 6 files.
  • Head SHA: e7d5564e9176eceaf2647bee1da8c61b40334983 (verified via git ls-remote origin refs/pull/2374/head, per the known gotcha that gh pr view can serve a stale head).
  • Files: e2e/README.md, e2e/cmd/testreport/main.go, e2e/cmd/testreport/main_test.go (new), mise-tasks/test/e2e/_default, mise-tasks/test/e2e/canary, mise-tasks/test/e2e/roger-roger.

What it does: adds an opt-in -fail-on-empty flag to the E2E reporter (e2e/cmd/testreport), introduces completedParent(p *parentTest) (only pass/fail/skip count), adds a case "run" arm in parseEvents that resets info.action = "" and info.elapsed = 0 so a retry needs its own terminal event, adds an incomplete counter plus Incomplete: N header line, adds NO TESTS RAN and INCOMPLETE (n/m tests completed) footer banners, enables the flag in all three mise tasks, preserves the gotestsum exit code over the reporter's, and adds || true to cat "$E2E_ARTIFACT_DIR/entire-version.txt" 2>/dev/null.

Verification I Performed

  • Ran go test ./e2e/cmd/testreport/... -count=1 — passed.
  • go vet clean; golangci-lint run ./e2e/cmd/testreport/... — 0 issues; shellcheck 0.11.0 on all three mise tasks — clean.
  • Built the reporter to the scratchpad and probed real streams.
  • Verified the run-reset is safe on the real rerun path: built a flaky test module in the scratchpad, ran real gotestsum --format dots --rerun-fails=1 --packages=. --jsonfile events.json. Parent event sequence was run … fail … run … pass; reporter correctly showed pass; a test not selected by the rerun kept its earlier result. pause/cont correctly don't reset.
  • Verified nightly compatibility: .github/workflows/nightly-e2e.yml uses grep -q '^Total: 0 ' "$ARTIFACT_ROOT/$AGENT/report.txt"; the header format is unchanged up to and past the two spaces, and Incomplete: is appended on a new line, so the grep still matches. Also confirmed the PR's stated justification for keeping that check is correct: nightly's comment says "Pin the checkout to the tag that produced the installed binary", so its mise tasks can predate the flag.
  • Confirmed the || true additions fix a real pre-existing set -eu bug: a missing entire-version.txt aborted the task before printing the artifact path or its own exit code.
  • Confirmed CI's test-windows job in .github/workflows/ci.yml only runs go test ./cmd/entire/cli/... -run '(Windows|MSYS)', so e2e/cmd/testreport is never built on Windows in CI. mise run test:ci:core runs go test -tags=integration -race over all packages, so the new test does run in CI on Linux.

Findings

Finding 1 (High, blocking) — e2e/cmd/testreport/main.go:273: incomplete > 0 is the first arm of the footer switch, so it outranks failed > 0. A run with real failures plus any interrupted test prints INCOMPLETE (1/2 tests completed) and no 💥 FAILED 💥 banner. Reproduced with a crafted stream yielding Total: 2 Passed: 0 Failed: 1 Skipped: 0 / Incomplete: 1 / … / INCOMPLETE (1/2 tests completed). That combination is what a -timeout=30m panic or killed test binary produces. On main the same stream printed FAILED, so this is a regression the diff introduces. Exit codes unaffected (gotestsum's rc wins in all three tasks). I authored and verified a patch reordering so total == 0 → failed > 0 (folding , %d incomplete into the FAILED banner) → incomplete > 0 → default; all existing table cases still pass because every one has failed == 0; the fail+incomplete stream then renders 💥 FAILED (0/2 passed, 1 incomplete) 💥.

Finding 2 (Low) — e2e/cmd/testreport/main_test.go:63: if tc.code != 0 && !strings.Contains(string(out), events) can never match on Windows because the reporter prints the path with %q, escaping backslashes. Verified directly: %q of C:\Users\runner\AppData\Local\Temp\x\events.json yields a doubled-backslash string that does not contain the raw path. Latent (CI never builds this package on Windows) but the test branches on runtime.GOOS == "windows" for the binary suffix. Patch: add "fmt" to imports and compare against fmt.Sprintf("%q", events).

Items I raised then withdrew after the user's scope challenge: INCOMPLETE/NO TESTS RAN banners are never colorized while FAILED/PASSED are (nit/possibly deliberate); canary uses || vogon_rc=1 where the other two tasks use || report_rc=$? (harmless); the -fail-on-empty message renders no tests completed in "" when reading stdin (closest to actual creep — no call site reaches it); README has an odd early line break at "Nightly retains its". I agreed #1 was in scope as a regression the diff introduces, #3 in scope but minor, and that I had over-weighted the rest.

Trail Findings Posted

Posted to what was then trail #1307 (https://entire.io/gh/entireio/cli/trails/1307), each with a verified --patch-file:

  • 01M285739H6J — High, e2e/cmd/testreport/main.go:273, banner precedence.
  • 01M2857DDNXA — Low, e2e/cmd/testreport/main_test.go:63, %q Windows assertion. I had to entire trail finding update this one because a garbled Go-string-concatenation fragment leaked into the body from the heredoc; the corrected body reads cleanly.

entire trail finding add has no --body-file; only -m/--body. The working tree was restored to the PR head unmodified after drafting both patches.

Cross-Session Status Report (2026-09-20)

I replied to cli-90 via SendMessage with: PR entireio/cli#2374 | REVIEWED | OPEN | checks: fail | review: REVIEW_REQUIRED | Fail E2E tasks when the test regex selects no tests plus an attention line noting only "Entire Gates" was red (all 16 other checks SUCCESS: lint, test-core, three integration shards, both canary backends, test-windows, CodeQL ×2, license-check, binary-size, test), and that both my findings were still open with no push since 2026-09-11. mergeStateStatus was BLOCKED, mergeable MERGEABLE at that point.

Current Status (as of 2026-11-02, final turn — partially gathered)

  • Worktree is on branch pr2374, clean, at e7d5564e9, which still equals refs/pull/2374/head — no push to the PR since 2026-09-11 (updatedAt unchanged), now ~7.5 weeks stale.
  • PR is still OPEN, not draft, reviewDecision: REVIEW_REQUIRED, mergedAt/closedAt null.
  • mergeStateStatus has degraded from BLOCKED to DIRTY — it now has merge conflicts with main. git merge-tree --write-tree origin/main e7d5564e9 reports CONFLICT (content) in e2e/README.md and mise-tasks/test/e2e/_default; mise-tasks/test/e2e/canary auto-merges.
  • Main still has the original bug: origin/main:mise-tasks/test/e2e/_default line 51 still runs go run ./e2e/cmd/testreport -color -o … test-events.json with no -fail-on-empty and line 55 is exit "${rc:-0}"; canary and roger-roger likewise lack the flag; origin/main:e2e/cmd/testreport/main.go has no fail-on-empty, NO TESTS RAN, or INCOMPLETE. Nothing has superseded the PR.
  • Main has moved substantially in the touched area since the branch point — commits include Windows canary sharding onto a Dev Drive, running the Vogon canary on Windows, Remove Gemini CLI support, antigravity-agent e2e legs, OpenCode cache repair work, and codex version pin changes.
  • Trail renumbering/re-addressing happened: trail #1307 now resolves to an unrelated trail, "Fix/graph command casing and language coverage" (01M3HTQF01TREWK3WT30D5CS4Q, https://entire.com/gh/entireio/-/trails/1307). The PR's trail is now #1656 — "Fail E2E tasks when the test regex selects no tests", ID 01M3HTQKCVR0BZX4C7D99MH46V, project gh/entireio, status open, URL https://entire.com/gh/entireio/-/trails/1656, created 2026-09-11T10:19:18Z, with change cli/1307 (current) on branch fix/e2e-empty-test-runs at https://entire.com/gh/entireio/-/trails/1656/changes/cli/1307. Its Gates read Mergeable: no, Head: e7d5564e, Conflicts: conflicting. Trails are now project-scoped under entire.com/gh/entireio/-/trails/<n> rather than repo-scoped under entire.io/gh/entireio/cli/trails/<n>.
  • Five findings are now open on that trail, all current freshness: my two (01M285739H6J High at main.go:273; 01M2857DDNXA Low at main_test.go:63) plus three newer ones filed by someone/something else — 01M32V7H2AKG (Low, e2e/README.md:109, the 19-character orphan line "Nightly retains its", traced to commit bb937dcb4), 01M32V7FE6K7 (Medium, e2e/cmd/testreport/main.go:82, -fail-on-empty detects incompleteness but never gates on it / ContainsFunc), and 01M32V71PC7Y (Medium, e2e/cmd/testreport/main_test.go:42, two table gaps found by mutation testing — deleting a whole case arm goes undetected).
  • Auth context is uk.auth.entire.io, user github:Soph, jurisdiction us, token in macOS Keychain, login expires in 29d.
  • Note: entire trail list --status any --branch <branch> is not a valid invocation (printed root usage); entire trail finding list --branch <branch> --status any and entire trail show --branch <branch> both work.

Open Threads

  1. Report the status to the user: PR stale 7.5 weeks, now conflicted (e2e/README.md, mise-tasks/test/e2e/_default), 5 open findings, main still carries the bug the PR fixes, trail now #1656 at a new project-scoped URL.
  2. The author has not responded to either of my findings; both still have unapplied patches attached.
  3. The MCP server claude.ai entire-prod-us disconnected mid-session; its ~90 tools are unavailable. The entire CLI via Bash still works.

Most checks still running, but test-canary (git-refs) — the most relevant one — already passed. Let me watch for the final verdict:

e97ae21Address review findings on the E2E incompleteness reporting Five findings from the trail review. A failure now outranks an incomplete test in the footer banner. `incomplete > 0` was the first arm of the switch, so a run with real failures plus any interrupted test printed `INCOMPLETE (1/2 tests completed)` and no `FAILED` banner — the shape a `-timeout` panic or a killed test binary produces. The arms are now `total == 0`, `failed > 0`, `incomplete > 0`, and a run that both failed and was cut off reports `FAILED (0/2 passed, 1 incomplete)`. `-fail-on-empty` becomes `-fail-on-incomplete`, and gates on what it detects. The old condition was satisfied by a single completed parent, so a run where 5 of 6 finished and one was cut off exited 0 and left detection of the partial case entirely to gotestsum's exit code — which reflects the tests that reported a result, not the one that never reported at all. The flag has not shipped, so the rename costs nothing. Counting moves into `countParents`, so the report body and the exit status cannot disagree about what completed, and `completedParent` stays the single definition of "completed". The error message names standard input instead of rendering `""` when events arrive on stdin, and distinguishes "nothing ran" from "n of m did not complete". Two test gaps, both found by mutation testing. Nothing pinned the `FAILED` banner: deleting the whole `case failed > 0:` arm left the suite green. And the case named `rerun` was `fail` then `pass` with no `run` between, so it never exercised the reset at the heart of the retry handling — real `gotestsum --rerun-fails` emits `fail`, `run`, `pass`. Added both shapes plus the fail-and-incomplete precedence case; all four mutations are now caught. The test asserted on the raw input path, which `%q` escapes on Windows, so that branch could never match there. It compares the quoted form now. Reflowed the README section, which had `Nightly retains its` orphaned on its own line. Verified: `mise run test:e2e:canary` green (53 vogon + 4 roger-roger, no incomplete parents); a real `gotestsum --rerun-fails=1` stream over a genuinely flaky test (`run, fail, run, pass`) still exits 0; shellcheck and `mise run lint` clean.
